<최소한의 행위가 주는 충만함에 관하여>
충남 아산에 위치한 온양민속박물관에는 50미터 길이의 부속 건물이 있습니다. 우리들이 ‘일자집’이라고 부르는 이곳은 박물관의 허드레 공간으로 지어졌지만, 멋 내지 않은 검박한 아름다움이 있습니다. 시간이 만들어낸 매우 자연스러운 정원을 마주 보고 있는 이곳을 카페 공간으로 바꾸는 설계를 맡게 되면서 가장 중요하다고 생각한 것은 최소한의 행위가 채우는 충만함에 관한 것입니다.
이곳은 오랜 시간이 축적되어서 만드는 멋짐이 있는 곳이기에 우리들은 더 꾸미거나 힘을 주는 것이 아니라, 이 아름다운 장소를 오시는 분들이 새롭게 발견하고 느낄 수 있는 공간이 되었으면 하였습니다. 한 시도 가만히 있지 않는 자연의 시시각각 변하는 모습이 아름답다는 것을 잊어버리고 사는 현대의 우리들에게 자연과 시간의 레이어 그리고 묵묵히 한 장소를 지키며 가꾸는 사람들의 아름다움을 전달하면 좋겠습니다. 주인공은 정원이기에 정원의 연장선에서 작은 오두막과 같은 공간을 카페 공간의 가장 안쪽에 배치하였습니다. 이 파빌리온은 종이로 만들어서 천정에 매달아 두었는데 움직임에 따라서 흔들거릴 정도로 가벼워서 매우 약하고 소박한 것이 만드는 감각에 관한 것들이 공감되기를 바랍니다.
<On the fulfillment of minimal actions>
Onyang Folk Museum, located in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, has a 50-meter-long auxiliary building. This place, which we call ‘Iljajib’, was built as a museum space, but it has a frugal beauty that is not flashy. When I took on the design of converting this place, which faces a very natural garden created by time, into a cafe space, what I thought was most important was the fulfillment that minimal actions can fill.
Since this is a place with beauty that has been accumulated over a long period of time, we did not want to decorate it or give it more strength, but rather wanted it to be a space where people who come to this beautiful place can discover and feel new things. I hope that we can convey the beauty of nature, the layers of time, and the people who silently protect and nurture a place to those of us living in modern times who forget that the ever-changing appearance of nature, which never stands still, is beautiful. Since the main character is the garden, a small hut-like space was placed at the innermost part of the cafe space as an extension of the garden. This pavilion is made of paper and hung from the ceiling. It is light enough to shake with movement, so I hope you can empathize with the sense that something very fragile and simple creates.
