<Humble thoughts, actions, and space >
In Gangjin, famous for being the place of exile of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, there is a small tavern called Sajae in addition to Dasan Chodang. In 1801, after being exiled, Jeong Yak-yong stayed in this thatched house for the first time and spent four years there. Living in a small, humble room of the house, Jeong Yak-yong named it Sajae, meaning "a house where one who practices right thinking, appearance, speech, and behavior resides," and began his exile life.
Almost Homestay Gangjin is a newly renovated hanok village located right next to Sajae, and among the houses, the thatched house is coincidentally situated next to Sajae. Fortunately, we were tasked with decorating this thatched house as a guest room.
The existing space had a very closed and cramped structure, so we boldly created a very special window in the living room. We spent a lot of time designing the bathroom, where we wanted to create a sense of space and framed views that traditional hanok spaces offer, despite its small size. Next to the front gate, we placed small picnic furniture by the half-bed (banchim), so guests could easily take them out when needed, close the gate, and enjoy a private outdoor time.
