이번 전시를 준비하면서 개인적으로 가장 마음에 두었던 것은 비극과 슬픔이 한 몸이고 누군가를 추모하는 이 공간이 역설적으로 매우 따뜻하고 신체적이었으면 좋겠다는 생각이었습니다. 민화를 유심히 들여다보면 잔치나 큰 일을 치룰 때 과거의 전통 속에서도 장막을 치고 행사를 치르는 그림을 발견하곤 합니다. 이를 현대적인 방식으로 구조를 만들고 장막을 치고, 더불어 장막으로 공간을 세분화하고 동선을 길게 만들어서, 매우 살갑게 닿는 듯한 신체적인 관점에서의 따뜻한 공간을 만들면 어떨까 하는 것이었습니다. 편백나무로 공간안에 집을 짓듯이 건축을 하고 여기에 광목을 실로 꿰매서 매달려 있는 구조로 공간을 만들었습니다. 장막을 들어 올려서 술로 묶으면 개구부가 되고 예측할 수 없는 동선을 따라가다 보면 어느 사이에 추모의 공간으로 들어서게 됩니다. 가능하다면 이어령 선생님에 대한 추모와 더불어 누구도 피할 수 없는 죽음에 대한 생각을 해보는 계기가 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 죽음을 매우 따뜻하고 신체적으로 생각해보는 경험이 가능하다면 이 또한 이어령 선생님과 생전에 나누었던 전시의 이야기에 합당한 것이라 생각하였습니다. 한 땀 한 땀 실로 천막을 꿰어 메면서 누군가를 위한 정성스러운 마음이 무엇인지 다시 한번 생각하게 되었습니다. 개인적으로는 매우 특별한 경험을 선물 받은 프로젝트입니다.
What I personally kept in mind the most while preparing for this exhibition was that I hoped that this space, where tragedy and sadness are one and in memory of someone, would paradoxically be very warm and physical. If you look closely at folk paintings, you will often find pictures of tents being set up and ceremonies being held even in past traditions when holding a banquet or funeral. The idea was to create a structure in a modern way, put up a curtain, subdivide the space with a curtain or make the movement lines longer, and create a warm space from a physical perspective that feels very gentle. It was built with cypress trees as if building a house in a space, and the space was created with a hanging structure by sewing cotton together with thread. If you lift the curtain and tie it with tassels, it becomes an opening, and if you follow the unpredictable path, you will suddenly find yourself in a space of remembrance. If possible, it is an opportunity to remember Mr. Lee Eo-ryeong and to think about death, which no one can avoid. I hope so. I thought that if it were possible to have the experience of thinking about death in a very warm and physical way, it would also be appropriate for the wartime stories I shared with Ms. Lee O-ryeong during her lifetime. As I sewed the tent, stitch by stitch, I thought once again about the sincerity of caring for someone. Personally, this is a project that gave me a very special experience.
