<지속가능함에 대한 실험 - The Revitalized>
우연한 기회에 폐기되는 학교 책상과 의자 한 트럭을 인수하게 되었습니다.
오랜 기간 동안, 누군가의 성장을 위해서 묵묵히 헌신해 왔을 그것들은 노후화와 더불어 폐기될 운명에 처해 있었습니다. 비록 상처와 부분적인 파손은 있었지만, 스틸 프레임으로 되어 있는 가구들 이었기에 다행이도 구조적으로는 큰 결함은 없었습니다. 한국에서 학교 교육을 받은 사람이라면 누구든지 경험 했을 이 가구들은 자신들의 기능을 다 한 이후에는 쉽게 처분 되고 있었습니다. 우리들은 한국 문화의 한 단면을 보여 준다는 점에서도, 뭔가 사명감 같은 생각을 하게 되어, 우리들의 상상력이 이 가구들에게 새로운 기능으로 생명을 불어 넣어 준다면 좋겠다고 생각하였습다.
6개의 스토리는 각각 기존의 책상위에 올려지는 부가적인 가구의 형식을 띄고 있습니다. Reuse가 아니고, 버려진 책상을 가치있는 새생명의 책상으로 revitalised라고 하는 개념이기에 폐기된 책상은 새생명을 부여받은 새로운 책상으로 다시 태어나게 된다면 좋겠습니다.
<The Revitalized>
I happened to take over the whole tables and chairs of a classroom of an elementary school.
They played a variety of roles together with the growths of many students but are now regarded old and destined to be scrapped soon. Contrary to the old European school furniture, of which production is highly elaborated and is highly evaluated and traded at high prices even now, Korean school furniture is a result of mass-production for big population in the highly developing era and is hardly regarded valuable. Though the economic value of those tables and chairs is very low, I believe the scratched and the dented after long use are extremely meaningful as reminders of memory and the imagination of children’s life. I wanted to lengthen the life of these not by their original shape but by different ones. I put six respective stories based on one function, ‘Putting-On-It’. They are for plating, for stationary, for coffee-regarded, for reading, for tea-time, and for kitchen (see pictures). I hope these examples could be a proposal of new function of old furniture and revitalize them of story of various memories and imagination.
